Managing Organizational Identity: The Case of a Multinational Corporation

Professor Yair Berson,
Assistant Professor,
Department of Management, Polytechnic University

Tuesday, April 29th. 2003
11:30 - 12:30pm
RH517 conference room

Executives often strive to manage an organizational identity that integrates multiple stakeholders or constituents both within and outside the organization. In this study we examined organizational identity in the context of a multinational corporation (MNC). We argued that MNC executives, and particularly the CEO, would promote an identity that is flexible enough to maintain uniformity across subsidiaries, yet responsive to local or national values of subsidiary managers. We examined both CEO communications (company annual report and speeches) for evidence of organizational identity and values, and stakeholders' survey ratings of management styles in 23 subsidiaries of a Fortune 30 high tech MNC. Dr. Berson will discuss the implications of our findings for globalization and cross-cultural management.
