Urban Security in Perspective George Bugliarello, University Professor President Emeritus, Polytechnic University
Professor Bugliarello served as Vice-Chair of the National Research Council's Committee on Army Science and Technology for Homeland Defense and is an appointed member of the U.S. National Academies-Russian Academy of Sciences Committee on Terrorism Confronting the U.S. and Russia, as well as Co-Chair of a joint Russian-American Task Force on Urban Security. In 2002, Professor Bugliarello organized Polytechnic University's Urban Security Initiative to address pressing urban security problems through the engineering, scientific, management and educational capabilities of Polytechnic with collaborating institutions, industries and public entities. He will address cities as primary targets for terrorism and propose a series of principles and observations concerning the protection of cities, including lessons learned from the events of September 11, 2001.
Homeland Security and its Impact on Modern Innovation: Observations and Considerations Mel Horwitch, Professor of Management Director, Othmer Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies Director, Institute for Technology and Enterprise Polytechnic University
Professor Horwitch has written extensively on innovation and technology strategy. More recently, he has addressed the impact of Homeland Security on U.S. innovation. He views the emergence of Homeland Security subsequent to September 11, 2001 as a possibly dominant societal issue that is transforming today's "innovation portfolio". Professor Horwitch examines how Homeland Security may influence innovation in key sectors (e.g., aerospace/defense, bio-pharma, physical infrastructure, information technology) as well as the emergence of a "Homeland Security Sector" that may affect innovation.
The Israeli Homeland Security Sector following September 11th: Case Studies Yair Berson, Assistant Professor of Management Institute for Technology and Enterprise Polytechnic University
Professor Berson is involved in studies of leadership in high technology settings as well as cross-cultural leadership. In 2002, Professor Berson carried out interviews with executives from the high technology Homeland Security industry in Israel to determine the degree to which Israeli companies were ready for the business implications of the events of September 11, 2001, focusing on organizational issues that affect their potential success in the U.S. market.
