Overview of the Round Table

During the past ten years, the Israeli biotechnology sector has begun to flourish and capture the attention of professionals around the world. A recent study of the Biotech industry conducted by the Office of the Chief Scientist in Israel indicates that the number of companies in the sector has grown from 30 in 1990 to 160 and that the workforce employed by these companies now numbers 4000, a significant increase from the 600 employed in 1990. It has been projected that the biotechnology industry will generate annual revenues of between $2 billion- $3 billion by 2010.Underpinning and supporting this phenomenal growth is an extensive array of research programs underway at Israel's universities, specialized institutes, and hospitals, and substantial investments from venture capitalists based in Israel, the US, Europe and Japan

While all of this activity suggests that the industry will indeed develop into a leading center of biotechnology, innovative enterprises in this sector face numerous managerial challenges. These include creating an organization which can successfully capitalize on both internal and external resources which are essential for developing biotech products, developing the appropriate talent, and finding the right blend of entrepreneurship and management. This Workshop will explore these challenges. Drawing on the insights of experts from both Israel and the United States, we will take a sophisticated in-depth look at such issues as:

  • The optimal organizational approaches for creating innovative biotechnology enterprises
  • The role of large corporations in the development of this sector
  • The best strategy for nurturing relevant leadership and talent in Israel
  • Lessons that can be learned from successful companies in the recently established Israeli high-tech industry
