Dr. Schillinger organized Polytechnic's Division of Management and served as its first dean. He has been a member of Polytechnic's faculty since 1957 and has taught courses in
management, operations research, and electrical engineering. He developed new courses in technology management, policy
analysis, probabilistic systems, and information theory. In 1990 he received the University's Distinguished Teacher Award.
He is the author of numerous articles.
As Dean of Interdisciplinary Programs he was responsible for furthering the development of innovative curricula and research involving all disciplines at Polytechnic.
Among his priorities were programs dealing with science, technology and policy, including international technology
transfer and economic development.
In 1980 he was Distinguished Faculty fellow at the Yale School of Organization and Management. He has been a Visiting Professor at Yale, and developed and taught courses in
technology management and policy in both the School of Management and the School of Engineering. He has been a frequent
speaker at executive programs for corporations and government agencies, among them IBM, GTE, GE, and the U.S. Army.
Under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Schillinger has served as a consultant to the governments of Cameroon, Indonesia, Pakistan, Portugal, and Thailand.
He served as Chairman of a National Research Council delegation to Hungary and India, and as a NRC delegate to
meetings with the Academies of Science of Bulgaria and the former Yugoslavia. He has served as Chairman of a NAS Advisory
Panel on Central Europe, and from 1989 to 1991 served as Chairman of a Panel on Eastern Europe.
In recent years Dr. Schillinger was an invited speaker on educational policies affecting scientific and technical
manpower in Argentina, Brazil, Uzbekhistan and the United States, and on the management of technology in Ecuador.
In the Fall of 1983 he was Isambard Kingdom Brunel Lecturer on large-scale projects at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. Dr. Schillinger served as the Executive Director of The American Society for Macro-Engineering, a Vice
President of the International Association of Macro-Engineering Societies, and a member of the Board of Directors of both.
