55 Broad Street: The Digitalization of Physical Space

Authors: Andrew Conway, Mel Horwitch, Jeffrey Sampler and James Short

This multimedia, Web-based case, jointly developed by the Institute and London Business School, deals with several significant business issues related to the development of "smart-ready" and "wired" buildings and the resulting communities of firms, organizations and professionals that form.

The case focuses on the decisions and actions taken by the Rudin family in Manhattan, during the 1994-1997 period, in transforming one of its major properties--55 Broad Street--into the famed "New York Information Technology Center." (The Institute is located in this building, along with numerous large and small technology companies and other organizations.)
